New techniques and technologies have pushed the evolution of the hair loss treatment industry to new heights. Modern hair transplants have revolutionized an industry that first started out as “plugs” in the 1980s, a primitive approach that has certainly come a long way in terms of authenticity over the past few decades. Over the past 10 years in particular, there have been significant advancements in the non-surgical treatments of hair loss in men.

Now, hair transplantation for men has never looked more natural. Expert surgeons, like Dr. Brand and Dr. DiStefano of Northeast Hair Restoration, can provide natural-looking results with new options such as the No Shave FUE and other non-surgical treatments. Because of all these recent developments, there’s really never been a better time to get a hair transplant.

Today we’ll take a look at what’s new in the treatment of men’s hair loss for 2024.

Hair Loss in Men: Defined

Nearly 85 percent of men will experience some kind of hair loss in their lifetimes, and it can happen for different reasons. The most common is male pattern baldness, which affects up to 95 percent of men with thinning hair, caused by genes from their parents. Male pattern baldness is characterized by the horseshoe pattern of a receding hairline with thinning strands around the crown of the head.

It’s not uncommon for some men to start losing their hair in their teen years. In general, the sooner the loss starts, the greater the loss will become. Other types of hair loss include spot baldness (alopecia areata), scarring alopecia, diseases (anemia or thyroid problems), radiation or chemotherapy treatments, certain medications, dietary problems (deficiency in iron, too much Vitamin A), and stress.

Fortunately, there are ways to combat hair loss in men, especially those who suffer from male pattern baldness. And 2024 is a great year to start treatments thanks to all the recent advancements.

What Are Hair Transplants?
Hair transplantation and restoration has been used for decades in an effort to restore hair growth in men (and women) suffering from hair loss or baldness. This procedure involves the removal of individual hair follicles from a donor site (i.e., the back of the head) and transplanting them into other areas where they are needed most. Once there, the transplanted hairs will grow naturally, leading to a fuller head of hair.

The main types of hair transplants that we handle here at Northeast Hair Restoration include:

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
  • No-Shave FUE
  • Precision Follicular Extraction™

FUT

Also known as “strip surgery,” this is a surgical procedure that restores hair growth in areas of concern by taking a strip of hair-bearing scalp (2cm wide, 15-20 cm long) from the back of the donor area. The size of the strip will depend on how many grafts the patient needs, with individual grafts containing between one and five follicles. The average man needs two to three per graft, which means a 1,000-graft procedure will contain between 2,000 to 3,000 hairs that can restore an area affected by hair loss. This treatment takes between four and six hours, with a local anesthesia applied for comfort.

FUE

Like Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), FUE moves follicles from a donor area to another location of concern. The method of follicle removal is different with FUE, whereby individual follicles can be taken from the donor area rather than strips, which means there is no linear scar. Follicles are carefully extracted and implanted at the recipient site. Because the circular punch tool we use is only as big as the diameter of a pencil point, this reduces the risk of visible scarring.

This is a popular treatment for hair transplantation, as it offers several benefits over its cousin, FUT, including:

  • No linear scars
  • Comfortable treatment
  • Ability to take follicles from areas other than the scalp

No-Shave FUE

One of the most popular developments in hair restoration has been the No Shave FUE, which uses specialized technology to extract individual grafts without the need to shave the surrounding hairs. The result? A discreet hair transplant that looks and feels natural. This is the latest installment of the original Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which became popular in the 2000s as a less painful method than the previous option, FUT or strip method. The traditional FUE method requires follicles to be removed with a small punch one at a time, but the donor area has to be completely shaven to perform the extraction. Men with longer hair would then have an awkward haircut for a time until it could grow back. The no-shave FUE means -- you guessed it – no shaving is necessary. This is why it’s the most popular and least invasive option for men.

Not all hair transplant surgeons offer the No Shave FUE, as it’s a very specialized procedure that has only been perfected by a few surgeons around the country. Here at Northeast Hair Restoration, we offer this revolutionary procedure. Dr. Thomas Brand, trained by one of the leading hair transplant surgeons in the world, is a leader in the No Shave FUE in New England. Dr. Brand and Dr. DiStefano were the first hair transplant surgeons to offer the No Shave FUE in New England and have the most experience in the region with this very technical procedure.

Precision Follicular Extraction (PFE)

The Precision Follicular Extraction™ method is the latest advancement in hair transplants. With all the benefits of the No Shave FUE, the Precision Follicular Extraction™ method takes the process one step further. Using micro-FUE tools and Ultra-Fine Diamond Sapphire Blades, surgeons are able to extract the donor grafts without impacting the surrounding hairs. This means the appearance of your donor area remains virtually unchanged and the recovery period is much more comfortable than with traditional hair transplant methods. Each Precision Follicular Extraction™ procedure also includes a high density Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, which has been shown to improve growth of both the transplanted hair and native hair at no additional cost. It’s discreet, it leaves no linear scar, it’s minimally invasive, and it’s more comfortable.

A few takeaways of the PFE:

  • Like the No Shave, PFE does not require shaving of the donor area.
  • Utilizing the market's tiniest micro-FUE tools, we extract hair follicles with precision, leaving the donor site virtually untouched post-procedure.
  • Ultra-Fine Diamond Sapphire Blades: Our use of the finest blades allows for maximum density in the recipient site, creating a fuller look.
  • High-Density PRP: To enhance growth, we include high-density PRP treatments with your hair transplant at no additional cost.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Men who are in the early stages of hair loss are good candidates for non-surgical treatments. In the past, we were limited to treatments such as finasteride. Although this is still a good option for some male patients, we have access to newer and better therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). These can all heal the follicle and reverse miniaturization while growing thicker, healthier hair.

  • LLLT: This process uses cold-beam lasers to restore hair growth while improving hair health.
  • PRP: This is a non-surgical treatment whereby platelets and growth factors are isolated from your own blood. The plasma is then injected into the scalp to stimulate follicle repair and recovery while strengthening the hairs.
  • Topical Finasteride: This is a class of medications known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, used to treat receding hairlines or balding in men. Taken once a day as a tablet, it works by blocking male hormone production in the scalp that prevents hair growth.
